Poor performance in Virtual Machines

This VMware KB Article has enough tips and tricks that I felt it needed to be referenced directly.

Highlights are:

  • Remove old hardware devices/drivers from P2V'd machines
  • Use the LSI Logic driver on Windows 2003 servers
  • Use the correct ACPI HAL
  • Welcome Aboard Newsletter: Primus Networks

I recently started a new position with Primus Networks in Austin, Tx. The latest newsletter is out which includes a little blurb about me coming on board. Man am I am fetching in my Hawaiian shirt!

Windows log on then immediate log off

I was recently assisting a client with an XP machine that was infected and caused the user to no longer be able to login. They system boots to the login screen, and you can input your username/password, but after that the system instantly logged off. Turns out the virus had modified the registry and deleted the Userinit entry in the Winlogon key.

Tftpd32 TFTP Server Windows 7 x64 DHCP fix

I recently acquired an Asus EEEPC 1005 HAB and started to work on getting the XP OS installed by default replaced with an Ubuntu image, and a Windows 7 image. I decided to use PXE boot for the installation of the Ubuntu image, and immediatly ran into issues using TFTPD32 on my Windows 7 x64 machine that already existed. I was getting a "PXE-53 Error: No boot filename received" error every time I started the netbook. I could see the DCHP request complete by watching the logs on the TFTP server, but always got the same error.
