Cold Camping -- Success!

We went out on a 3 day hiking adventure over the weekend and found out what sub-freezing temperatures can be like. Below are links to the weather histories.

We started out Saturday at the Guadalupe River State park in Spring Branch. This is half way between Austin and San Antonio on US 281. Very pretty park that was well maintained. It was really just a crashing pad that rolled into Sunday morning. We thought this would be the coldest we saw and it got down to 28! We were wrong...

On Sunday we took off for Lost Maples Natural Area which is out towards Bandera off TX 46. On Sunday night we saw our coldest night yet when we dropped down around 24 as it moved into Monday. But no matter how cold it was at night, we still managed to get out and do some hiking during the day, and the weather was amazingly warm in the afternoons. I found that the long johns kept coming on and off. Our last night there, Monday into Tuesday was very tolerable at 50. None of us complained one bit ;)

In all the trip was a huge success. We had a great time and despite the oppressive burn bans that meant NO campfires, we all still stayed plenty warm and got to experience being out in the cold camping. Woo-hoo!
